Old Avalon owes its start to an epidemic that never came. In 1917, with influenza threatening the area, 132 acres were given to the city of Warren for a place to treat the sick. When the virus didn't show, the land was kept for recreation only, and a municipal nine opened in 1928. A second nine followed not long after. The city owns it.
It's known for its small greens. The front side is more forgiving, though No. 1, No. 6 and No. 7 can make you work. After the turn, the fairways run between trees and the greens are tiered. Keep an eye out for the eagles' nest on 13.
The boys' and girls' teams from Howland and Niles McKinley high schools call it their home course. Before the turn, phone the clubhouse with your 20th Hole Snack Bar order.
