TeeTime Golf Pass Tip of the Week: Mastering Energy Control in Putting

putting

Ever feel like putting is just a guessing game? You’re not alone. But according to Darren deMaille from QuickFixGolf.com, great putting comes down to energy control, not acceleration through the ball.

Most golfers make the mistake of taking a short backstroke and then accelerating through impact. But that’s not what good putters do! Instead, they arrive at the ball with the speed they need—no extra push, no unnecessary follow-through.

Try This Drill to Improve Energy Control

All you need is a hockey puck:

1️⃣ Take your normal backswing.
2️⃣ The moment your putter makes contact with the puck, your stroke should stop—no extra follow-through.
3️⃣ Repeat until you get comfortable with this controlled stroke.

By learning to arrive at the ball with the right speed, rather than accelerating through it, you’ll instantly improve your distance control and eliminate those frustrating three-putts.
