Larry Packard drew up the course at Lake Barkley State Resort Park, and it opened in 1972. The 18 holes roll gently past mature trees, with fairways that are well defined and ultradwarf bermuda greens carrying subtle contours. From the back tees it plays 6,601 yards to a par 72. Blue Spring Creek comes into play on many of the holes. Kentucky's Department of Fish and Wildlife helped restore it in recent years, which did the surrounding hills good as well as the golf. The park adds boating, fishing, swimming and nature trails. Keep an eye out for wildlife. Leave the cooler in the car: Kentucky law keeps outside alcohol off state park courses, and the course sells drinks, snacks and food.
