Lakes of the North was timber country first. Much of the land belonged to David Ward, a surveyor who made himself into a millionaire timber king, and it stayed in Ward hands until the mid-1960s. When lots went on sale in 1968, a 9-hole golf course was part of the plan. Nine more holes came later.
Now it's a public 18-hole course, spread over 7,000 yards of rolling Northern Michigan ground. It plays with a links feel, and the hazards are placed so you have to think your way around. Settings Restaurant, right on the course, feeds golfers in summer and snowmobilers in winter.
Every hole has a flyover video on the course website, if you want to see it before you play.
