Hancock's nine holes started out as a WPA project, designed by Robert Trent Jones. Ground was broken in March 1941, but work stopped with about half the course done, and the sprinkler pipes were dug up for the war effort. Members tried again in 1946 and in 1957, and by 1959 the course was, more or less, complete.
No. 5 is a dogleg. Long hitters can take it over the trees, drawing the ball around the corner, and reach the green in two. The fairway's final 120 yards narrow and slope hard toward the water, and the green tilts sharply that way too, so stay below the hole.
The round ends on the longest par 3, which starts open and narrows to a green inside a horseshoe mound.
