Four Mississauga businessmen opened Granite Ridge in 1996, below the Niagara Escarpment in Milton, and the club grew to 36 holes in 2000. Rene Muylaert and Dick Kirkpatrick, both Canadian architects, drew it.
Ruby, a par 70 that tops out at 5,800 yards, has water in play on 14 of its 18 holes. It starts with a decision on No. 1: lay up, or carry the big pond on the left. The par 3 17th sits under the escarpment, with a pond and bunkers short and trouble long.
Cobalt is a par 72 that stretches to 6,300 yards. Its par 5 4th has out of bounds down the whole left side and two ponds guarding the green, and the 18th, a dogleg right, ends at a green ringed by bunkers.
There's a practice green and a warmup net, walking is allowed, and the Albatross Restaurant serves golfers and the public.
