A tree stands right in the middle of the fourth fairway at Northumberland Valley, on a big dogleg left. The club's own advice is to carry your drive 15 yards past the stake, over the pond. Come up short of the tree and you're punching under the branches just to get to around 100 yards.
It's nine holes in all, set down in a wooded valley with hills rising on either side, off Highway 45 and just north of the 401. New owners have added a driving range, a pro shop and a stone patio that looks across the course.
Then there's the fifth, a short par 4 with a hidden green. Aim a little left. Plenty of golfers have made their first birdie here.
