Most of Monterey runs beside Happle's Meadow, a mountaintop wetlands and wildlife preserve, and it's out of bounds all the way down the right, so a slice will cost you.
It's nine holes in Blue Ridge Summit, under Mount Dunlap and Monterey Peak, less than a mile from the Mason-Dixon Line. Folks have long called it a walker's course. The 1st doglegs right over a brook, with an old oak at the corner waiting for a wayward drive. On the 5th, a Scottish-style mound crosses the full width of the fairway short of the green, and the 7th plays to a bowl green.
In July 1863, soldiers retreating from Gettysburg fought the Monterey Skirmishes on the road beside the first green. Wallis Simpson was born right next to the course, and Presidents Wilson, Coolidge and Eisenhower all played it.
