Settlers on the road from Shippensburg to Carlisle once stopped for room and board at the Black Horse Tavern, the big brick house on the property at Cumberland. It was a toll stop on Route 11. Soldiers from both sides of the Civil War came through. Local legend says a young boy haunts one of the upstairs rooms.
The course is a James Harrison design, dating to the summer of 1961, on 150 acres of rolling Cumberland Valley farmland that goes back to the late 1700s. Donn Mowery bought it in 1969. It's 18 holes at par 72, with four teeing areas.
A clubhouse and restaurant of 4,000 square feet arrived in 2001. Inside, the Silver Cup Lounge has a full dinner menu, a big beer list and a full bar, and an outdoor patio sits right next to the bar and kitchen.
