Iron ore was mined here in the 1800s, and farms followed until the 1960s. Edmund Ault got the job in 1966 and routed the Founders Course in a classic Northeastern style, with big, contoured greens and fairways lined with trees. It opened in 1968, and bunkers and tees were renovated in 2006.
Trees line most holes, but nothing is blind. A lake of 7 acres touches several holes on both nines, and Ault saved the hard part for a 5-hole run that starts at the par 5 14th. The Penn National Inn sits off the 8th fairway.
The club is semi-private and runs on daily fees. The Founders Grille serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a mountain view patio, and its Black Oak Bar, named for a champion black oak that stood on the property from 1840 to 2017, pours local craft beer and Pennsylvania wine and spirits.
