Rich Maiden is named after two townships. Jake Merkel, a Fleetwood native, founded the course in 1931 on farmland that ran across Maidencreek and Richmond Townships. He didn't hire an architect. He laid out the original nine holes himself.
It grew to 18 holes in 1946 and 1947, and the Quarry Hole, No. 12, comes from that stretch. Keep your eyes open on the way round: old stone quarries are dotted across the property, and you can still pick out traces of the original greens and ponds.
The fairways run between the trees. On weekday mornings, look out for the Locker Room Gang, a league of retired golfers who say newcomers are welcome.
