A.W. Tillinghast put the golf at Shawnee Inn on an island in the Delaware River. There are 27 holes, played across the Red, Blue and White courses, and the place has hosted both the PGA Championship and the Senior PGA Championship. The resort dates to 1911 and the Kirkwood family still owns and runs it. Working with Audubon International, it keeps protected bird sanctuaries out on the golf island. Practice starts at the 250-yard driving range, and the Tillinghast Chip n' Putt adds six par 3 holes designed by Tom Doak. PGA professionals handle private lessons and group clinics, and juniors get programs of their own. When the weather won't cooperate, the golf simulator inside the Gem & Keystone Tavern takes up to four players a session. Group outings and leagues are welcome too.
