Rees Jones had 372 acres of Amish Pennsylvania countryside to work with at Broad Run, and he made the most of the hills. From the Black tees it's a par 72 of 6,751 yards, rated 73.4 with a slope of 139, with three ponds, Broad Run Creek, wetlands and 54 bunkers to steer around. Tees, fairways and greens are all bentgrass. The card makes No. 14 the 1 handicap, a 422-yard par 4 from the Blacks. It's hilly enough that walking isn't allowed, so plan on a cart. Practice ground covers a grass range, target greens, a short game area and a putting green. Outings run from 16 to 144 players. The Grille, inside the Bordley House, takes its cue from John Beale Bordley, a Baltimore judge who kept a farm in Chester County, so the menu turns with the seasons. Sit inside or out.
