Brickshire opens with its own version of the 3rd at Augusta National. The 7th, 9th and 11th borrow from Pinehurst No. 2, then St. Andrews and Riviera. Architect Tom Clark drew up 14 original holes and four tribute holes, with input from Curtis Strange, who won the U.S. Open twice.
You'll play shots uphill and down, off uneven lies, around wetlands and water. The fairways are wide and mostly forgiving, though several of them tilt, so trust the black-and-white aiming posts. The greens are fast bentgrass.
The round ends on a peninsula green, with water and sand waiting for anything that misses.
It's in New Kent County, right off Exit 214 of I-64. Anyone can eat at the Brickshire Grille, inside or on the patio.
