Pendleton's range lets you practice the shots a flat mat never will: part of the grass tee is set aside for hitting off uneven lies. With ten target greens out there and a chipping green ringed by bunkers, it's worth showing up early.
Thomas Walker, who used to be the Gary Player Design Company's lead designer, laid out the course. It cuts through thick Ruther Glen woods, and five sets of tees let you pick how much of it you want. It's 1.5 miles off I-95, an easy drive from Richmond or Fredericksburg.
Call the snack bar after No. 8 and your order's waiting when you make the turn.
