Algonkian follows the Potomac River through Sterling. Ed Ault designed it in 1962. It's part of NOVA Parks' Algonkian Regional Park, and you can rent a cottage by the river.
Each half has a feel of its own. The front is long, with old trees lining it, and water's in play on three holes. The back nine rolls, with a stream to deal with on four holes. The fairways are Bermuda and the greens are big. Save some focus for the 6th, a big par 5 that doglegs left, and the 16th, a long par 3 to a green that's wide but shallow.
The snack bar does sandwiches and grill food, with patio seats outside.
