Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the course at Cacapon Resort State Park, and its arrival in 1974 is what turned this into a resort park. The park opened in 1937, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and covers more than 6,000 acres under a folded ridge in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, near Berkeley Springs.
It's a par 72 with four sets of tees, wide fairways and strategic bunkering. The pair to know: the par 3 fourth and eighth holes share a single double green, 110 yards of it.
PGA professionals teach by appointment, the golf shop has rental clubs for men, women and juniors, and Getty's Grill overlooks the course for a sandwich and a beer after. Make a weekend of it: stay at the lodge, in a cabin, or at the Old Inn, which has been restored.
