The first tees and holes here were laid out with a tape measure, a knife and some tin cans. That was Jack Henson, an attorney and State Attorney General. F.L. James, a course builder, directed the final layout.
Back in 1922 this was the Opequon Golf Club, and its clubhouse still stands on the original limestone foundation. It sits on the highest point of the grounds, looking east over the Shenandoah Valley.
It's nine holes on 175 acres, laid out in a rough circle with Opequon Creek along part of the edge. The Sycamore, the restaurant inside the clubhouse, does casual classics and fusion dishes.
