This course sits on an island. General Burnside Island State Park takes its name from Ambrose Burnside, the Civil War general who led patrols on the Cumberland River around this 400-acre island, watching for Confederate soldiers. Today Lake Cumberland surrounds the golf course.
Brian Ault, who also designed the Dale Hollow Lake course, routed these 18 holes through wooded ground with gentle changes in elevation, mature trees and natural rock. The fairways are Zoysia, the greens are bentgrass, and the bunkers were recently renovated. Watch for the par 3s, and bring an accurate approach for the greens.
The pro shop has riding carts and pull carts. Hotels in Somerset and Burnside are a few minutes away, and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park lies a 25-mile drive east, with hiking trails and the falls, where you can sometimes catch a moonbow.
