In the 1940s, Carroll Park was the only golf course in Baltimore City where African Americans were allowed to play. A group of Carroll Park's African American golfers challenged the city through several legal actions, and after many years they won full access to every Baltimore City public course. What they started led Baltimore to desegregate all its public recreation facilities, not just golf.
Today it's a 9-hole course on Washington Boulevard, and it's the closest of the Classic Five to the downtown hotels. A cab from a downtown hotel gets you to the 1st tee in under 10 minutes.
Business people often play a quick round before work and come back for another afterward. Flew in without clubs? The pro shop rents them.
It's also home to the Craig Willinger Memorial FootGolf Course, where you kick a soccer ball around shortened holes.
