Lancaster's opening hole has swallowed plenty of golf balls. It heads uphill with a creek down the right and woods on the left, and the club's own hole guide says a breakfast ball might be worth negotiating. The approach plays a club up the hill to a green that tilts hard from back to front, so don't go long.
The course began as nine holes in 1909. Donald Ross redesigned it in 1926, and nine more holes came along in 1959. The scorecard gives each side a name. The front is the Jack Kidwell Side, the back the Donald Ross Side.
It's public golf in Fairfield County, about 20 miles from Hocking Hills. Alfonso's Italian Grille is right at the clubhouse, looking out over the course.
