Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald's grandfather, Willis B. Machen, once farmed this land on Lake Barkley, just south of Eddyville. Today it's Mineral Mound State Park, and its golf course is The Cullan, an 18-hole par 72 designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. Lake views line much of the front nine, and the back nine heads into the woods.
No. 5 is a par 4 of 389 yards from Tee 1. From those tees the course runs 6,561 yards, with wide fairways, renovated bunkers, old trees and elevation changes.
The pro shop rents carts and clubs and sells snacks. The park adds a boat ramp, a fishing pier and a picnic area, and the course at Kentucky Dam Village is close by for another round.
