The ninth hole at Mohonk is called Orchard. Albert Smiley, the founder of Mohonk Mountain House, laid these nine holes out on an apple orchard in 1897, on land that belonged to the Mountain Rest Dairy Farm. In 1911 a Scotsman, Robert Pryde, lengthened the course and gave it a Scottish touch.
Every hole has a name, from Mt. Rest on the first tee to Ravine and Pitch Down along the way. The fairways roll, some tee shots are blind and you'll get your share of uneven lies. Mohonk calls it a shot-maker's course, an old design that still holds its own against modern equipment.
The Golf Shop sets up private lessons if you want some help.
