On the sixth hole at Markdale, a river sits in front of the green and you've got a decision: lay up short and play it safe, or take it on and maybe get wet. By the club's own account it's the hardest hole here, and trees squeeze the fairway from both sides, so the tee shot isn't easy either.
The next hole asks you to carry a large pond, then you cross the river yourself to get to the green. That's a lot of drama for a nine hole, par 34 layout.
The course began as Centre Grey Golf Course, built next to the town's curling club, and in 1965 the two clubs joined. It's a not-for-profit run with help from local volunteers. Once golf season winds down, the four sheet curling rink takes over.
