Shade Mountain sits right where the name says: 200 acres of woods and rolling ground under a mountain in Middleburg. Ed Ault laid out the 18 holes in 1969, and they don't give you much room. Landing areas off the tee are tight and the doglegs turn hard, so plan each shot before you pull a club.
There's water and white sand along the way, and the greens are bent grass. The Birdies Nest Restaurant & Bar pours drinks on tap and has the game on a wide screen.
No. 1 runs downhill the whole way. No. 5 bends a little right, and with the tees up, the green on this par 5 is within reach of a good second shot. On No. 13, a par 4 that turns left, a small stream cuts across the fairway.
