Water touches 12 fairways at the Bear Trace at Harrison Bay, but this Jack Nicklaus design gives you more room to play safe than that number suggests. Most of the greens are open in front, and the bunkers are classic Nicklaus.
It sits in Harrison Bay State Park, about 20 minutes north of Chattanooga, with water and thick forest all around. Pines and hardwoods line the Bermuda fairways, and the greens are Bermuda too.
It's run with the wildlife in mind. The course is part of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, and its electric carts and mowers are quiet enough not to bother the animals.
