Shenvalee got its name from a newspaper contest. Readers were asked to write in with a name for the new resort, and the winning letter came from Kizzie Hayes, a schoolteacher from Broadway, Virginia. She wrote that the name brings to mind both the Shenandoah Valley and Virginia.
The golf is 27 holes on three nines, and every 18-hole round pairs two of them. The Olde Course is the original, in play since 1927 and built by crews with picks, shovels and horse-drawn wagons. Bobby Jones stopped by that year.
Smith Creek winds through the Creek Course, and then there's the Miller Course.
Stay over in a golfside or poolside motel room, or take the Fairway House, whose deck looks out on the No. 1 tee of the Miller Course.
