Curtis Strange grew up in Hampton Roads, and Bide-a-Wee carries his signature. He consulted on the rebuild with Tom Clark, from the firm Ault, Clark and Associates, and the course reopened in April 1999. The old greens were small and narrow and fell away hard at the sides.
Now you're putting on bent grass, driving between pines that squeeze the fairways, and keeping an eye on the lakes and ponds that turn up all over the property.
Anticipation, the 1st, is a par 5 that long hitters can try to reach in two, with sand left of the landing area and water right.
It's one of two courses the city of Portsmouth maintains. The Bide-a-Wee Pavilion looks out on the 2nd hole and fits up to 300 people, so it works for a big group.
