Alpine Lake splits its 18 holes evenly: six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s. The course belongs to a resort community up in the West Virginia mountains, just outside Terra Alta, and it's open to the public.
Mountaintop Vacationland was the name when it all began, back in the late 1960s. Morgantown industrialist J.W. Ruby bought it in 1971, renamed it Alpine Lake and drew up the plan for a whole residential community around a lake that now covers 150 acres.
If you'd rather stay the night, the 35-room hotel overlooks the golf club, and the big outdoor deck takes in both the course and the lake. Deep Creek Lake in Maryland is a short drive away.
