Hogs and crops came before golf at Green Crest. In 1950 George and Delene Harter bought a 79-acre farm here and worked it, until Mitch and Richard Harter told their dad in 1969 that the family should get into golf.
They had no expertise and next to no equipment, but they shaped and seeded the course themselves. Nine holes opened first, and all 18 were open in 1972. Mitch and Richard planted almost every tree you'll play around. The clubhouse fireplace is built from a layer of rock they found while they dug the lake out on the 15th hole.
The property has grown to 110 acres, and it's still a Harter operation: Jason Harter manages it today. He also teaches at the Crest Academy of Golf, with video swing analysis and launch monitors. For food and a drink, there's the Crest Bar & Grill.
