Highlands Golf Park lets you practice uphill, downhill and sidehill lies, plus greenside and fairway bunker shots. The range is lit at night. It's under 20 minutes north of Charlottesville, just off Rt 29.
There's mini golf too: Pirate Pete's, 18 pirate-themed holes. You putt around and through obstacles, hills and bumps, and the park books it for group outings and birthday parties.
Anne Marie and Peter Scheuermann opened the park in 1997, and Anne Marie dedicated it to her father, Leslie W. Mercer, a Scot and a golf instructor himself. Their daughter Gretchen, an LPGA Class A teaching pro, took over in 2007 and teaches juniors and adults.
